Jesus Christ Superstar’s story starts with the point of view of his most notorious disciple, Judas Iscariot. The disciple becomes worried that Jesus’ followers are becoming out of control. He also implores Jesus to avoid interacting with the sex worker, Mary Magdalene, but Jesus does not heed Judas’ advice. However, Judas’ worries were not unfounded. The high priest of Israel, Caiaphas, is plotting to kill Jesus to stop his massive following from further growing.
The musical’s story may not be the traditional depiction of Jesus Christ’s story. Still, several events may be familiar, such as Jesus driving out vendors from the temple, healing the lepers, the Passover meal, Judas’ betrayal, and the crucifixion. This fantastic musical received wide critical acclaim upon opening on Broadway in 1971. In 1977, the production finally opened in London’s West End and ran for several years. By 1980, Jesus Christ Superstar had garnered over $236 million in ticket sales. Indeed, the musical has become a true cultural phenomenon.
In 1972, Jesus Christ Superstar won a Drama Desk and Theatre World awards. More than four decades later, the revival won a Laurence Olivier Award and two Evening Standard Theatre Awards in London. Meanwhile, the musical earned numerous accolades at the Tony Awards in 2000 and 2012. The original production was directed by Tom O’Horgan and featured a sensational cast. In the 50th anniversary revival, the production features a highly-regarded ensemble composed of David Andre, Courtney Arango, Wesley Barnes, Sara Andreas, Milena Comeau, Lydia Ruth Dawson, and many more. The tour will also be directed by Timothy Sheader, while Drew McOnie will lead choreography.
