America’s most hilariously cantankerous housekeeper first made the world laugh and laugh and laugh as a 1993 comedy-drama based on Anne Fine’s 1987 novel Madame Doubtfire. Directed by box-office magnate Chris Columbus, the film featured the late Robin Williams in the titular role. It received numerous honors from the Academy, Golden Globe, and People’s Choice Awards and notched a place in the AFI’s 100 best comedy films of all time.
Mrs. Doubtfire then shuffled her way to the 5th Avenue Theatre of Seattle, Washington, at the tail-end of 2019, where it was met with exceptionally popular demand from fans and critics alike. Originally slated for a Broadway premiere in April of 2020, the musical was halted temporarily by the COVID-19 pandemic, officially opening at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre in December of the following year. The engagement generated much noise during the 2022 award season, notching one nomination from the Tony Awards, six from the Outer Critics Circle, and a win for Outstanding Wig and Hair Design from the Drama Desk.
“A crowd-pleaser from beginning to end.” – The News Herald
The success of the US productions would later spawn a month-long fall excursion in the UK’s Manchester Opera House, as well as a still-ongoing West End run at the Shaftesbury Theatre — both of which earned unanimous acclaim.
