Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, creative founders of WICKED, were motivated by the 1995 Gregory Maguire story "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West".
This production has been PRAISED for its expansion of the backstory of Oz, giving The Wizard of Oz fans around the globe a look into Glinda and Elphaba (aka the Wicked Witch of the West). Wicked, even with its main characters starting off as enemies, it is a deep journey about acceptance and friendship. With stunning costume creation and breathtaking special effects, WICKED guides the audience straight to the wonderful world of Oz!
The production originally premiered in 2003, thus it is now 21 years old. Since its first performance, Wicked has gone on to surpass $1 BILLION in revenue on Broadway. Only The Lion King and The Phantom of the Opera have accomplished this incredible achievement. WICKED has also toured theatres outside of Broadway, with records in Los Angeles, San Fransisco, St. Louis, and London.
