Wicked’s roots date back to 1900, when L. Frank Baum published his seminal novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The story inspired the quintessential 1939 motion picture The Wizard of Oz. Generations sat down to enjoy the whimsical film for its fanciful backdrops and beloved characters, including the pivotal Wicked Witch of the West. Then in 1995, Gregory McGuire would write and publish Wicked: the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The seductive title would bring about Wicked, the Broadway show we’ve come to know and enjoy.

Stephen Schartz’s brilliance and talent breach generation gaps, from beloved Disney films to unadulterated Broadway enchantment charm. The hit-making virtuoso who brought Godspell and Pippin to the world has now breathed life into smash-hit Wicked, which comes to Hollywood Pantages Theatre for the winter playbill.
Wicked smartly combines political themes, unusual heroes, and improbable love within a medley of catchy tracks, including Defying Gravity, which has taken Broadway by storm.
The story follows Elphaba, the adulterine daughter of the wife of Munchkinland’s governor. Despite her family and identity issues, Elphaba makes it into the esteemed Shiz University, where she bunks with social butterfly Galinda. Two complete opposites don't take to each other at first but soon become fond of each other.
Unfortunately, things go downhill when Elphaba notices heinous crimes against the Animals, a sentient race often tormented by oppressive forces. Galinda and Elphaba go to the Wizard for help, but the Wizard disappointingly offers little assistance. A let-down Elphaba leaves the Emerald City to fight for the Animals, leaving everything else behind.
Meanwhile, Galinda climbs the social ladder, marries Fiyero, the Captain of the Guard, and pursues an aristocratic lifestyle. Elphaba accidently earns Fiyero’s eye as he falls in love with her and her values. Will the couple’s love blossom unburdened, or will Elphaba’s mission for justice push Fiyero away, and destroy her?
Wicked kicked off its first debut in 2003 at San Francisco’s Curran Theatre. As its popularity spread, it made its way into new theatres year after year, receiving international acclaim with performances in London, Ireland, Mexico, Germany, and even Australia. Its capacity to bring in audiences also inspired Hollywood to make a movie based on the Broadway show, that released November 2024.
Wicked collected numerous awards during its prime in the 2000s, including 2 Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Lyrics, 3 Tony awards, and a Grammy award for Best Musical Theater Album.
